SPRU FAQs

About SPRU

What is SPRU?

SPRU is fresh spirulina grown in closed bioreactors in Linden, Johannesburg, and sold frozen in the formats available in our shop.

How is SPRU grown and prepared?

We use filtered water, filtered air and food-grade nutrients. After harvest, the biomass is washed, separated by centrifuge, portioned and blast-frozen at βˆ’18Β°C.

Who supervises the farming process?

SPRU is farmed under the personal supervision of Dr Melinda Griffiths, PhD (UCT and the University of Cambridge), an algal biotechnology and spirulina scientist.

Does SPRU contain added sugar or preservatives?

No. We make SPRU without added sugar or preservatives and keep it frozen after production.

Using and storing SPRU

How should I store SPRU?

Put SPRU in the freezer as soon as it arrives. Keep it frozen; do not store it in the fridge.

How do I use it?

Defrost only what you plan to use, then shake or stir it into juice, smoothies, breakfast bowls, dips, dressings or sauces. It can also be taken as a quick shot.

How much should I use?

Follow the serving guidance for the product you choose. Our daily serving guide explains the available options.

Is SPRU a treatment for a health condition?

SPRU is a food, not a medical treatment. It is not a replacement for prescribed medication or care from a health professional.
