Fresh spirulina, grown in Johannesburg
SPRU was founded in 2020 by Shaun Glover. We grow and prepare fresh spirulina at our farm in Linden, Johannesburg.
How we grow and prepare SPRU
We grow spirulina in closed bioreactors using filtered water, filtered air and food-grade nutrients. After harvest, we wash the biomass, separate it by centrifuge, portion it and blast-freeze it at −18°C. SPRU is kept frozen through storage and delivery.
Science-led farming
SPRU is farmed under the personal supervision of Dr Melinda Griffiths, PhD (UCT and the University of Cambridge), an algal biotechnology and spirulina scientist.
