Spirulina During Chemotherapy: What a 2019 Randomized Study Reported

QUICK SUMMARY

A randomized 2019 study reported differences in selected blood and immune measures. It did not test fresh-frozen SPRU or cancer outcomes.

Research note: This is one clinical study of Spirulina capsules alongside chemotherapy. It is not evidence that Spirulina treats cancer or that SPRU has the same effect.

Study design

Ge and colleagues (2019) randomized 100 patients receiving chemotherapy: 60 received 900 mg of Spirulina daily during the first two chemotherapy cycles, while 40 were controls. The groups were followed over four cycles.

What the authors reported

The study reported differences in white blood cell and neutrophil measurements after the first two cycles, and in severe myelosuppression and chemotherapy-regimen changes. It did not find statistically significant between-group differences in haemoglobin or platelet counts. Some immune markers differed after four cycles; others did not.

Limits

This study did not measure tumour response, survival or whether Spirulina treats cancer. It used a capsule product, not SPRU fresh-frozen Spirulina. Anyone receiving cancer treatment should discuss supplements with their oncology team; this article is not treatment advice.
