Phycocyanin and Endometrial Cancer: What a 2022 Study Tested

QUICK SUMMARY

A 2022 study tested Spirulina-derived phycocyanin compounds in cell and mouse models. It does not show a human treatment effect.

Research note: This study tested specific Spirulina-derived extracts and purified compounds in preclinical models, not a Spirulina food in people.

What the study tested

The 2022 paper examined Spirulina phycocyanin extract and purified components, including allophycocyanin and C-phycocyanin, in endometrial-cancer cell experiments and a mouse model of peritoneal dissemination.

What the researchers reported

They reported changes in cell migration and epithelial–mesenchymal-transition markers, as well as an effect on dissemination in the mouse model, under the study conditions.

Limits

These results do not establish safety or effectiveness for treating endometrial cancer in people. They do not show that eating SPRU has the same effect. The older article's claims about chemotherapy, radiotherapy or confirmed safety are not findings from this study.
